CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Skye’s plane thundered over a haze of thick, dark clouds toward the doomed island of Revelo. Jordan paced back and forth like a caged animal ready to strike. His fist clutched his cutlass. His muscles were tense with frustration.

Bree watched his glinting blade pass by her bare knees as he stalked past her seat for the fiftieth time. “Jordan, you’re starting to freak me out. Why don’t you sheathe that thing and relax for a minute?”

“I can’t relax. Jakjobb said he’s sending his hardest commander to Revelo. We have to warn Dektan and the rebels that this so-called ‘Scourge of Skulls’ is coming for them.” Jordan banged a fist on a bulkhead. “This is so frustrating. I wish I could just call him, or send him a text.”

Immersa peered out the window at the clouds as if trying to stare down her fear of flight. “Sadly, calling out to him or sending written messages are only efficient means of communication over very short distances.”

“No, I mean…” Jordan shook his head. “Never mind. It’s an Earth thing.”

Skye spoke from the pilot’s seat. “I feel your pain, Ace. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wanted to give someone a ring, or even a squawk on the radio. But Vallerain is still in the communications stone age. There’s really only one way to get a message between islands fast.”

“And what’s that?”

The demon lovingly patted the instrument panel. “You’re riding on her.” She gently eased the yoke forward. “Don’t worry, we should be within visual range within a few…”

Her words died in her throat as the Trailblazer dipped below the clouds, revealing the crescent of Revelo Island. Thick black plumes of smoke rose from the jungles. The pungent, acrid scent of it seeped into the plane as it plunged through the ashy clouds.

Small sea vessels flying Hallion flags sailed swiftly around the island, chasing away any civilian ships trying to make landfall. But they hardly seemed a threat compared to the massive Imperial warship that blocked the harbor, firing broadside cannon blasts at any islander ships that tried to escape. The burning wreckage of hulls and masts sank into the sea as a warning to others foolish enough to attempt crossing the Imperial blockade.

Bree stared out the window, her mouth hanging open. “We’re too late. The Hallions beat us here!”

“Then we’ll beat them back,” Jordan snarled. “Skye, can you get us on the ground?”

The aviatrix maneuvered to keep the choking pillars of smoke between her plane and the Hallion guns, using them as a literal smokescreen. “Sure can. Looks like there’s a road running up the middle of the island wide enough to use as a landing strip.”

“Do it,” Jordan ordered.

Skye swung the plane around and lowered the landing gear. A swath of clear dirt appeared within the dense jungle, and she deftly tipped her aircraft into the gap.
